Going Back in Time: Rigging in Blender 2.49

Todor Nikolov gives us a history lesson by returning to Blender 2.49.
Lately, I’ve found myself diving into Blender’s history. I originally got into it during the 2.6x days, and back then, 2.49 always felt like a completely different beast. Almost alien. But now that I have more experience with Blender, I decided to revisit 2.49… and honestly, I was surprised by how feature-rich it already was back in 2009.
You might be wondering why I’d put myself through that. Well, here are some of the reasons:
- Just for fun
- To better appreciate how far Blender has come
- To show that even older tutorials can still teach us something, despite the UI changes
I hope you enjoy this little rigging session!

In 25:24 and forward it is possible to edit the IPO Curves by clicking the black spots and hitting tab to enter edit mode to acesss the handlers (just checked). I think that this was possible even before this version.
Elephant’s Dream was made in previous version.
2.49b is the Big Buck Bunny and Yo Frankie Version when the GLSL render matured and the Game Engine had massive improvements like the State Machine.
Oh goodness, hitting tab on the curve did not occur to me.
Thanks for the corrections and info :)
My Blender history starts with v2.61 and it’s still just as much fun as it was then.
Never gets old! :)
