Introducing ‘Merger’: An Addon to Help Organize Complex Blender Scenes
Many of us know the headache of importing detailed CAD, SketchUp or assets from other 3D software into Blender, only to be faced with thousands of tiny mesh parts sometimes nested many levels deep. It can bring your workflow to a crawl!
To solve this common frustration, Andrew Luzhetskyi introduces “Merger”, a new Blender addon designed to help you quickly organize and consolidate these complex imported scenes.
“Merger” offers a set of intuitive tools to:
- Quickly join meshes based on their “Parent Empty” structures, maintaining their place in larger hierarchies by keeping the original grandparent.
- Organize objects by material, merging parts with the same material (or distinct multi-material combinations) into new, clean meshes.
- Simplify nested groups by consolidating meshes from child Empties under their main parent.
- Perform powerful collection-wide operations, including merging all meshes in a collection into one, or sorting and merging the entire collection by material.
- Declutter your entire scene by iteratively deleting all childless, unused Empties with a single click.
Whether you’re working with detailed imported models (like CAD or SKP files) or building intricate native Blender scenes, “Merger” aims to reduce object counts, improve performance, and make your models significantly easier to handle for texturing, animation, and final output.
This addon grew out of my own need for a faster way to deal with complex scene structures, and I’m excited to share it with the community.
