Blender: The Origin Story

Here’s a nice watch: Blender’s history in 8 minutes! I really enjoyed this.
In the latest XR Motion YouTube upload, Michael Steinberg dives in and explores the remarkable journey of Blender, a free and powerful 3D creation tool that has revolutionized the industry. From its inception in a small Dutch studio to becoming a global movement, Blender’s story is one of innovation, community support, and resilience. The discussion highlights key milestones in Blender’s development, including its transition to open source, the impact of community funding, and its current status as a serious contender in the 3D software market.

Ton Roosendaal, what a man, what an incredible figure…
A handsome man… An intelligent man… and above all, a generous man, in sharing with everyone such an incredible program as Blender…
Ton Roosendaal is for me one of the greatest names in modern history, immortalized through the art of everyone at Blender…
I can’t help but get emotional when I see this photo…
Forgive me but until I feel a tear fall from my eyes
May he be in our prayers every day, having divine protection.
your heartfelt words truly capture the admiration so many of us feel for Ton. His generosity and vision have undeniably shaped the creative landscape, and I’m glad this video resonated with you. Let’s all keep celebrating the amazing contributions he’s made to the art and tech world!
I once spent days trying to draw isometric product images in Illustrator, only for somebody in the marketing department to tell me he wanted a slightly different angle! Grrrr, I needed 3D! Since Autodesk prices were insane, I discovered Blender 2.4 and never looked back:-) Thank you Ton, you are a visionary.
Cheers to Ton’s vision, the blender team, and all the creators pushing boundaries!
Ton is a true hero for poor artists everywhere and has been for decades. I remember getting the shareware disc I ordered from Amiga World magazine with “Traces”, the first CGI software I ever played with. I couldn’t have possibly known what it would’ve expanded and evolved into over the last thirty years, let alone the impact the open source movement which Blender has spearheaded with Linux and a few other packages which truly democratizes modern computing.
Thank you Ton for kicking so much ass!
