The Blender Foundation just opened an official chat server for developers on chat.blender.org.
The chat runs on Element, the open source and encrypted chat server that works with the Matrix protocol. This ensures a high degree of privacy - although the chat does require users to log in with their Blender ID to view channel activity.
Some channels go beyond development; for example there are channels for Blender Teachers and Flamenco too.
One thing to note is that chat retention is set to 30 days. Anything older than that will be lost. This makes sense as chat media focus on the real-time aspect of communities, but not on any kind of knowledge retention. Any conversation or documentation that requires longer-term availability should happen on the developers forum.

"One thing to note is that chat retention is set to 30 days"...
Sigh... Everything is throw-away these days.
