Behind the Scenes: Quantar (The Star Bridge)

INTRODUCTION

Hi, I am Deepak Kushwaha from India. My interest in 3D art stemmed from my curiosity about science, space, and sci-fi shows. I began this journey three years ago with the goal of creating awesome and cool sci-fi artworks, and this journey still continues.

I primarily learn by watching tutorials on YouTube and experimenting with new techniques and styles.

I am deeply grateful to all the incredible individuals who create these excellent tutorials for the Blender community.

INSPIRATION

I got the inspiration for this render from a quantum mechanics concept. There is a theory that at the quantum level, there are many small portals that open and close at random times and in random places, causing the uncertainty of quantum particles. So, I tried to create a science-fictional machine that controls these small portals and merges them to create a large portal in a specific space, keeping it open for a longer time so a large mass can pass through. This can be used to make a bridge from any point in space.

I chose a snow mountain scene because particles or atoms are less excited and more stable in a cold environment compared to a warm environment. (Yeah, I know it is getting a little bit scientific.)

I didn’t use any specific image for reference; just tried to create which scene and angle fits better.

PROCESS

I used Blender 3D for modeling and rendered in Eevee.

Rough Sketch

First step: I drew a rough sketch of the sci-fi machine and the scene.

Modeling

Second step: I modeled the sci-fi structure from scratch using the default cube.

For the snow mountain, I used a free 3D model of a snow mountain from BlenderKit.

Texturing

Third step: For most of the metal textures, I used free sci-fi panel textures from BlenderKit and manually UV projected them onto the model.

For the portal texture, I made it procedurally from scratch. I wanted to give it some emission with some transparency on top with curly and wave patterns.

For the nuclear core texture, I used the following shader nodes.

For the background sky texture, I used a free cloudy image from the internet and combined it with a color ramp node to give a dark sky effect.

Lighting

Fourth Step: I used two light sources, one to light up the whole area and another to highlight the sci-fi machine. I also used a very dim world light to add some more light to the scene.

Render & Post-processing

I rendered this in Eevee with a resolution of 2300 x 1080 px and a camera focal length of 23mm.

After rendering, I did some color grading in DaVinci Resolve and added a snowfall layer.

And that’s it! Below are the final renders and the animation.
