Fort Solis - 3D Concept Design Overview

0

Rafal Banasiak was hired by Fallen Leaf and Black Drakkar Games to create environments for their upcoming game, 'Fort Solis'. Check out these project shots!

In 2021 I joined the team at Fallen Leaf and Black Drakkar Games to design a highly ambitious title Fort Solis. The indie-sized team and a large project scope necessitated a new concept design workflow to speed up our production pipeline.

My solution was to build all environments directly in Blender 3D, allowing fast iteration of ideas for environment layout, function and lighting. The environments were then detailed with individually hand-modeled props, architectural features and textures. The 3D scenes were sent over to the 3D Art Team alongside detailed 3D renders and paintover sketches to communicate my ideas quickly. I also animated several designs to better describe their functionality to the Team.

The artists at Fallen Leaf and Black Drakkar Games did a phenomenal job at translating my designs into the game. I included footage from the final product for comparison.

More artwork from the project on Artstation.

Software used: Blender / Photoshop

The environment and prop designs showcased in the video were hand-modeled and textured in Blender and rendered with EEVEE. I included footage of the game running in UE5 to show how the 3D Art Team translated my designs into the final product. I hope you enjoy!

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.
