Remembering Phil Gosch

5

It is with a heavy heart that we share the news of the passing of Phil Gosch (known as Saphires) and his wife, Mikaela. Our deepest condolences go out to their families and all those who held them close.

Phil was an integral part of the Blender community, having been with us from the early days. He had deep 3D and coding knowledge was always advocating for Blender. We had the pleasure of hanging out with him on multiple Blender Conferences, where he also presented his work relating to Blender and AI last year. I got to know Phil a passionate, level-headed and very funny person.

Phil and Mikaela were also active in the Austrian skateboarding scene; a tribute in their memory can be found here: Tribute to Phil and Mikaela (Google translated).

They had just gotten married in Greece in August. Tragically, during what should have been a blissful honeymoon, they were caught in the midst of the devastating floods.

Please feel free to leave a memory of Phil or a message in the comments below.

Phil, you will be deeply missed.

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. That's very, very sad. I knew Phil from the online Blender community and social media, and he was always sympathetic. Such a tragic way to go, and way too young. My condoleances to his loved ones.

  2. Blender Renaissance on

He was a great person, we shared a mutual interest in blender memes. I never thought I would read this news in my life. RIP, I will miss him dearly.

  3. What a tragedy for these two young people. We were able to get to know Phil in Graz at the weekly Blender Heads meeting. He was an intelligent, fun-loving and loving person. We will miss him very much.

  4. Very tragic news, and on his honeymoon no less. I saw him speak before; I can only imagine how he was in real life. My sincere condolences to his friends and loved ones. He was taken from us at a far too young age.
