Behind the Scenes: Watch Out!

1

INTRODUCTION

Hello, my name is Shivam Modi, a self-taught Blender artist from India. Right now, I work as a freelancer, with Blender being my primary tool. Naturally, my Blender journey began with a Doughnut. 🍩🙂

INSPIRATION

My main inspiration for creating this shot comes from the streets of Jaipur, where I live. Shops and buildings near the market in Jaipur are painted in a peach colour. A blurry image of a wall and sky popped into my head, and then I put characters from a story-line that I have created.

PROCESS

Hardware

  • CPU- i7-10700k
  • RAM- 16GB
  • GPU- RTX 3060

Software

  • Blender
  • Photoshop
  • Pureref

REFERENCES

Below are the references for characters and environment.

MODELLING

For the characters, first, I painted the references myself. Then looking to the references I modelled the character accordingly.

I used the same method for the car as well.

I used Bool Tools to block out the windows and used techniques from Ian Hubert to make a 3D model by extruding a 2D plane with image projection.

Below is a GIF video depicting the steps of creating the environments.

TEXTURING

For texturing, I extracted textures from photos I clicked and from the web, and then applied a paint-over.

My primary style reference for texturing is the artistic style of Angela Sung.

ANIMATION

For rigging, I used AccuRIG for basic arm, leg, and body movements. However, for expressions, eye, and eyebrow movements, I used shape keys.

LIGHTING

For lighting, I used an HDRI called Rolling Hills, from Poly Haven.

I added a big cube covering the whole scene with volumetrics. I used several planes with emission and transparency to create more depth. I used the compositor for colour correction, and I am excited for the  upcoming Blender real-time compositor updates.
