Automatically check for Blender Updates with this free add-on

1

Are you tired of keeping an eye out for new Blender versions, and especially patches? John Einselen published an add-on to automatically check for updates every time you launch Blender.

I really wanted an easy way to tell when the next #Blender3D version was released. Instead of daily checking Blender.org, which doesn’t take very much time at all (but adds up), I spent many hours creating an add-on to do it for me (because that’s WAY more fun).

And since the collective us can save way more time than I spent making this, thereby justifying this effort beyond “I’m learning #Python,” I hope all you Blender users here like it.

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. That's it! This add-on should be made a permanent feature of Blender to make it yet more pro. Also to prevent problems downloading from sites other than blender.org may cause.
