Behind the Scenes: Summer Evening

INTRODUCTION

Hi, my name is Timothy Augustine, and I enjoy creating 3D environments as a hobby. I’m a self-taught artist when I’m not working at my day job in IT. I live in California, USA.

INSPIRATION

My primary inspiration was a painting by Ian Roberts. I found this particular painting on the cover of his book, “Mastering Composition.”

Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to find a separate version of this painting outside of the book’s cover illustration.

PROCESS

I started this project as a way to familiarize myself with Octane Render and Geo-Scatter.

GROUND

I sculpted the ground until it roughly matched the desired shape. I didn’t focus much on texturing them as they will not be visible beneath all the vegetation. For ground cover, I used assets from Grasswald and Quixel Megascans.

For the trees, I utilized assets from Maxtree. While their assets are highly detailed (and poly-heavy), I still didn’t feel the same about the foreground tree.  So, I kitbashed some branches from Megascans and covered the lower branches with moss to make up for this.

LIGHTING

For lighting/rendering, I used the default sky lighting setup in Octane. There was a slight learning curve when I first started using Octane, but I found it quite intuitive, especially if you are familiar with cycles.

COLOR MANAGEMENT

In my opinion, the star of the show was the AgX color management, which I began using halfway through this project.

The colors were so natural and pleasing that I didn’t feel the need to do much post-work on the final render. The final render is now using AgX color Management.
