Being able to insert a loop cut that keeps the curvature of a mesh is something I consider essential. Sadly this is not in Blender by default, but with the free Edgeflow and Fast Loop add-ons you can do it!

Hi Simon,
Maybe I don't get it, but doesn't beveling the edges accomplish what you indicate?
Beveling edges can give you a similar effect, but the outcomes are not identical.
Beveling a couple edges will add geometry, but this plugin / addon will shape that extra edge data/geometry to follow a particular curve profile. Try creating the same effect with just beveling edges, and you'll see that it requires more effort to match circular profiles, where as this add on intuitively and correctly adds geometry that matches an accurate arc or circle profile.
