Behind the Scenes: Memories of June

4

Introduction

Hello, my name is Petra Trebješanin and I am a self-taught 3D artist from Split, Croatia.

I studied civil engineering and for my master thesis, I wanted to show my project idea in 3D. That was the first time I discovered and started using Sketchup. It was something new for me and I got interested in all the possibilities the 3D world has to offer. I wanted to improve more, so I started looking for more options than just Sketchup. I discovered Blender by accident on YouTube and ever since I made my first tutorial, I really loved it and I knew I had found my dream job. Since I studied civil engineering, I decided to further focus on architectural visualization.

Inspiration

Personal projects are something I enjoy doing especially in free time because I can create anything I visualize in my head, plus I get to make all the decisions.

My project, “Memories of June” combined two things I like: neoclassical architecture and designing gardens. I love to put a lot of trees and plants in my projects.

I found inspiration for this project on Pinterest, mostly for garden design and the general layout of the scene.

The House

Since it was a project done in my free time, I didn’t model the house. I downloaded it from 3D Warehouse and adjusted it a little bit with bevels and some details to the windows.

For texturing the house, I used a marble texture from Imeshh for the stone material and then added some variations to it using a Mask node from Wayward Art Company.

The Window frames were colored brown and used Archiglass Pro shader from Francesco Di Buono for the glass.

Foreground

After the house was done, I added one plane for the walking area and another for the grass. I subdivided the plane for the grass and added a displacement modifier to it to get some bumps. Then I modeled the pool and positioned it where I found it most suitable in the frame. In general, I follow the rule of thirds regarding composition, but mostly I just find the frame that looks interesting and good to me, and that is how I decide the positions of my cameras.

I textured the pool, the grass and floor planes with Materialiq addon, which really comes in handy because it automatically applies all materials to objects with one click.

Background

After looking at some references, I decided to put some trees in the background. I put a subdivided plane under the trees for the ground also with material from Materialiq. I used the trees from 3D Shaker and Botaniq addon.

Lighting

After positioning the first camera, I focused on the lighting. I used an HDRI from Poly Haven.

I knew I wanted to get some shadows on the house, so I decided to put a big tree in front of the house to cast those shadows. I made the tree with Grove addon to get a huge, lush tree. I still felt the light was too strong. I found a method on Imeshh youtube channel to simulate clouds by using a big plane high above the ground to cast shadows. For the cloud material, you just put noise texture into the alpha of the principled shader, and you get black and white spots––basically the illusion of cloud shadows on the ground.

Finalizing the scene

After I set up the lighting, all I needed to do was just fill up the scene with assets and plants. Again, I used 3D Shaker trees and Botaniq trees. For the shrubs, flowers, and ivy, I used 3D Shaker’s shrub collection, and grass scapes from Terra Scape and Botaniq.

For the furniture, I used assets from Imeshh and 3D shaker. Grass field was done with Scatter 5 addon. I also added concrete blocks onto the grass to make a small pathway

After I was happy with the scene, I added more cameras to show more interesting views and depths of field on all cameras. Then, it was ready for rendering! I rendered everything with E-cycles, after which I made little color adjustments in Gimp and that was it, the project was done and I was pretty happy with the result!
