The Blender 3.1 alpha has just gained a shiny new .OBJ exporter courtesy of Ankit Meel's GSoC 2020 project and with additional support from Howard Trickey.
Default cube + 9 subdivision surface levels. (triangulated faces) | File Size (MB) | Time Old (s) | Time New (s) | Speed-up |
---|---|---|---|---|
Export | 365 | 132 | 14 | 9.4X |
Default Cylinder: 2038 copies. (non-triangulated faces) | File Size (MB) | Time Old (s) | Time New (s) | Speed-up |
---|---|---|---|---|
Export | 20 | 12.3 | .9 | 13x |
The new exporter is a magnitude faster than the old one, owing to it being written in C++ as opposed to the previous python-based exporter.

Good news but other problem is blender obj file size in comparison with zbrush obj exported file size. its double !
interesting when Blender team fix 20 years old BUG with correct import FBX camera?
yeah, they could fix default framing camera and primitives also, it's about time.
Wait, they fixed the fbx camera direction import issue ?!!!
now a sketchUp importer / exporter that would be wonderful !
this would open a door to a big industry and pool of creative people
Updating and building from git should pick up these changes, shouldn't it? I don't think i saw any changes to cpp filed that looked relevant, and the OBJ import times were identical before and after. What about the Blender build process am I missing, to pick up these changes?
Does it mean, the IMPORT is also faster?!
