Behind the Scenes: Bubu the Toon Car

1

Bio

Hi, my name is Sayan Karmakar. I’m 17 years old and from India. I started learning Blender around one year ago. I’m in the beginning stage. While learning, I get help from my brother, who is a professional 3D artist. I’m loving the 3D world. And I just love Blender—it’s a great software. I want to build my career around it.

About the artwork

I got inspiration from Alexandr Anisimov’s Mimi concept, which is itself a 3D work, on ArtStation. I really liked the toon style and thought that it would be a nice practice project. My learning targets for this project were both modelling and texturing. This is the first time I’m using Substance Painter.

Modelling

As a beginner, I faced many challenges in modelling, especially in topology. I learned how to use basic shapes or cages for shrinkwrap in order to fix the dents that appeared after modelling. You can see it in the screenshot below—the blue object is the shrinkwrap object. This method really helped me. I also got to know how to use Bezier curves in order to model curvy shapes faster.

For the wheels, first I thought I would use texture only but there was no depth. So, I took time and modelled the wheel from scratch using reference. It looked better. There were lots of re-dos, but it was a fun and encouraging experience for me.

UVs and texturing

Then I learned UVs and texturing using Substance Painter. It was challenging to arrange the UVs. First, I separated the model into groups of objects based on their location and types, for example, top roof area, wheels, front, and back. Then I used a checkerboard map to scale and arrange the UVs according to texel density. I used 5 texture sets/materials for this project.

The texturing process was quite fun in Substance Painter. After watching some YouTube tutorials, I was able to use it. It’s easy to use with premade materials and baking options. At first, the layer system was confusing but slowly I got used to it. Smart masks are very helpful for AO and curvature details. In many areas, I had to hand-paint details like dusty corners, oil leakage, and stickers, of course.

For the background road scene, I used Megascans assets and textures. For the smoke, I got help from my brother. I’ve used Blender and Substance Painter and a little bit of color correction in Photoshop.

Hardware that I used

CPU: Intel i7 3770

GPU: RTX 3060

RAM: 24GB RAM
