Blender developer Lukas Stockner has implemented Zstandard compression for .blend files, a much faster and more flexible compression method that outperforms Blender's previous Zlib implementation in every way!
As mentioned the indefatigable Pablo Vazquez in this week's Blender Today stream on Blender's official youtube channel, this new compression method allows for .blend files to be compressed much faster than before, and saving is multithreaded to further improve performance. The caveat here is that older Blender versions will be unable to read the files compressed with this new algorithm.

Is this in 3.0 or is it in the 2.9 branch?
Blender 3.0 is the first version with this backwards compatibility breaking compression.
