Blender 3.0 release postponed

10

The chairman of the Blender Foundation Ton Roosendaal has announced that the release of Blender 3.0 will be postponed until late October early November, citing the need to properly prepare the landmark release, including by conducting in-person meetings and workshops at the institute this fall with the easing down of lockdowns and travel restrictions.

The normal release schedule adopted after the 2.80 release planned for four major releases per year, with a development cycle usually lasting around 20 weeks. Blender 3.0 however will be overshooting its previously assigned release date at the end of August by two months, during which module leaders and core members will have a time to re-align with a focused vision for Blender's development.

Cycles X made waves when it was announced a few weeks back, signaling a massive overhaul and speedup of the Cycles render engine

This extra development time means Cycles X will also be part of the release, a release which will take center stage during the online event scheduled to take place instead of this years (postponed) Bcon!

    Hello,

No Blender Before It Is Ready.

If it's not ready by early November the day should again be delayed.

  2. Correct. Blender got too much attention and money from the industry's top players to stumble. Make sure you release as bugs free Blender as possible.

You are correct. The Blender organization needs to not alienate any supporters. The CorelDRAW under Cowpland went from being the most popular 2d graphic suite to a distant placed has been. In the process, a lot of stockholders were wiped out.

The Blender organization needs to be devoted to the idea that quality is #1 and after that the other wonderful attributes such as usability, features and etc..

  3. Blender 3 might not be able to render 2.9 files as is. Blender in it's histories do not respect previous file compatibilities.

    • I never had problems open old files in new versions. Sometimes even the opposite happened: I could open newer files in older Blender versions, with some restrictions on certain areas as animation.

    • Blender 3 might be render 2.9 files or maybe can't. It is not so important. There is LTS. versions for this. And also you shouldn't double click to open blender files that created by different version. You can import them.

  4. I'm so glad to see quality of releases is regarded as more important than a fixed schedule. Keep this up, please!
