Eevee getting a major overhaul for 3.x series

Clement Foucault, the legendary mind behind the incredible Eevee real-time render engine, has announced in a post on the Blender Developer’s Blog that Eevee will be getting a major overhaul for the Blender 3.x series.

Eevee’s breakneck development pace never stopped since its release, with it just getting new Depth of Field and Ambient Occlusion implementations among other things for the latest 2.93 release.

The new DoF gives impressive results able to match Cycle’s path-traced results – at a fraction of the time

This announcement by Clement signals that Eevee’s development will be reaching new heights for/during the 3.x releases with a complete overhaul of the core architecture being worked on, allowing the engine to keep growing and evolving. Some of the planned new features include:

  • Optimizing and increasing render passes
  • Real-time compositor
  • SSGI support
  • Hardware ray-tracing support
  • Volumetric improvements
  • New shader execution model
  • Vertex displacement
  • Light linking
  • Panoramic camera support
  • And more…
