Human Generator - First Impressions

4

Jamie writes:

Creating realistic humans is one of the greatest ambitions of a 3D artist. Until recently it's been painstakingly hard and time consuming. The new Human Generator add-on removes a HUGE chunk of that work, allowing you to generate extremely realistic people in minutes instead of weeks.

This video is a demonstration of the addon and my first impressions. Spoiler alert - I'm very impressed!

  1. I think the software is well made and provides a good versatile generator, but sadly it suffers from the same problem they all do, that the humans it generates all look kinda the same, even the mor complex ones with totally custom settings. Still requires a fair amount of work to change the textures, resculpt the face to look more unique, etc. I also had some buggies with the Expression tools for setting character face, mixing expressions caused the expression to be lost in the ui if I closed and reopen. So I set all my expressions and then I reopen the character still shows correct expression but all the expression ui options are gone and I have to manually readd them one by one. Huge problem if I needed to change a complex expression like what I setup that mixed 4 expressions together.

    • Hey Robert. You're quite right - it probably needs mentioning that any human you create will likely need more work to make it look the way you want it. These kinds of generators usually get you around 70% of the way there before manual tweaking needs to take over.
That said, 70% still saves you days, or even weeks of time!

Definitely sounds like you've found a bug there. It's only just been released, so expect to find a few (I reported one I found last night). You can jump on the Discord to report bugs if you like:

I'm pretty sure those shapekeys will still be applied to your character, even if the controls have disappeared from the UI. Not ideal I realise, but at least you shouldn't have completely lost them.

    • Thank you Robert. I heard about Human Generator and wondered if this would be a problem but the Youtube reviews for it have been so full of hype I wondered if they were telling the whole story. Jamie, the Blendermarket page presents it as complete solution. Not "gets you 70% there".

      • Each to their own opinion Hcftn, but I just checked the Blendermarket page and it very clearly has a section called "Current Notices/Limitations". I've seen nothing that suggests this (or any addon) will get you 100% of the way to a finished product.

Anyone expecting a $128 addon to be capable of emulating literally every human shape on earth has their expectations set far too high.
