We (Oliver J. Post & Alexander Lashko) are very excited to announce that Human Generator has just launched!

Half a year in the making, Human Generator aims to redefine the way you work with humans in your Blender projects. It automates both the creation of the humans and the adding of hairstyles, outfits, expressions, and poses!

We made this time-lapse trailer to show a quick preview of what is possible with Human Generator:

You can find more about Human Generator on the website: HumGen3D.com

Have a great day!

  1. At this point in the year 2020 , we shouldn't be modeling human and their clothes, or cars or ships. And everything should be customizable from eyes to nose to skin. Why do we still use an ax to chop wood to warm ourselves? Blender need to rethink all this. Just imagine 30 years from now, we are still modeling the humans the same way as we are now. Why all these automatic humans still look so bad after all these years.

  2. Great to see more human development tools for Blender. I'm curious, however, as to how this is different from MBLab or MakeHuman. Both have similar capabilities with a wide range of customizations available. The only difference I see here is better hair and slightly better clothing. Could you elaborate on what makes HumGen superior to the free alternatives?

    • We think each of these tools has its own strong points and weak points. If I remember correctly, MakeHuman has options for changing very specific measurements of the body and makes it possible to make very low poly characters. The downside to this customizability is that you have to really know what you're doing to prevent the end result becoming a bit unrealistic.

Human Generator is more focused on user experience, making it almost impossible to make something that is not looking realistic. It also benefits a lot from high quality skin shaders, high quality expressions and as you mentioned the clothing and particle hair system.

I think these free programs are great tools, but require a lot more work by the user to get something at the same quality that Human Generator offers in a few clicks.

      • Very cool. Thanks for the reply. I'll keep an eye on this for when we need character models. Keep up the great work!

    • I don't want this to sound like an ad, but they're very much an issue of "you get what you pay for," unfortunately. You will not get results like Human Generator with MH or MBLab no matter how hard you try. They're okay if you can't model humans, but want art with human characters and don't want to pay money. MH has generous rights CC0 as well, MBLab not so much. Daz, Fuse, and Character creator will all give you better looking, higher quality results, and HumanGen looks MUCH higher quality as well.

MakeHuman gives rather ugly results (particularly the eyes and weirdly shaped female chest) and lacks definition in a lot of areas despite it's relatively high poly count. Topology is poor as well. There are custom morphs you can add on to make it semi-usable. MB Lab can look okay, but the figures are also often exaggerated and some of the presets are quite ugly and unrealistic, while many features simply don't work or break in use. Collar bone area in particular looks weird, and I'm not impressed with the cartoonish female body presets, ugly male head presets, and the Eevee shader is just awful. Trying to make the ugly presets less ugly is hard. I've given up on MH and MBLab and learned to model humans myself because I hated the results.

MB Lab and Makehuman use 2K textures for the entire body. Human Gen appears to use much higher quality textures. If you use MB Lab or Makehuman, your best bet is to just toss the original textures and make your own (though if you were going to do that anyway, not much loss there). MakeHuman isn't part of Blender either, so there's some kind of import/export process to figure out to get the rigged figure into blender (never liked any of my results enough to bother)

  3. I was also wondering what the difference is between the three. And yes, you can see that the quality of Human Generator is better than MBLab and Make Human. But only in a limited range. For such a license I expect a bit more options. It is yet to be seen how the content packs will develop. Make Humans Community System already offers a large selection for free. In any case, Human Gererator reminds me a lot of MBLab ?! So at the price with the license, I wonder if you don't go straight to DAZ for the range of options.

  4. Is Human Generator free for cinematic use? I don't want to sell characters or create games. All I want to do is make a few short movies. Is that permitted?

What if people pay to see the movie?

What if I create the movie for a client?

Sorry, but the legal doc is mind-boggling.

    Thanks.

  5. The tool that allows you to create a realistic human character without reinventing the wheel, and it's priced high (especially the commercial version). People say you should not be modeling an entire character, car, building, or any other model, as if the option to have a powerful generator for any or all types of 3d model is accessible to everyone, but these people do not understand that plenty of us blender users don't have access to that. They don't care about whether or not we can afford an addon/software that will help us create stuff efficiently without wasting time! You want to why people "reinvent the wheel"!? because that's the only free alternative out there!! It makes the progress of creating a project longer, but unless they have lots of money or powerful hardware, there's nothing they can do to speed up their workflow!!!! this will not be accessible to everyone in the future! In 30 more years, you will still see some users modelling their assets!! You'll still see some people not using stuff like substance products, instead using a primitive tool and time-consuming method to create 5 to 7 types of textures!! You will still see some people using old and outdated hardware to get by, hoping it doesn't break on them!! In the future, those who have more money and powerful hardware will be the influencers of art and design while the rest of us who don't have that will be left in the dust, forgotten by everyone!! Because who cares about a random nobody who's not even worth anything at all!?!? No one cares!

  6. Can I use human generator to create characters using the Genesis 9 figure. Can i load Genesis 9 into blender and then use human generator inside blender to modify Genesis 9 character with the human generator shapes etc?
