Google Poly is closing, transfer your models to Sketchfab with this app

If you use Google Poly to share your 3D models, this may be relevant for you.

As you may have seen, Google Poly, the 3D model sharing site from Google, will be shutting down on June 30, 2021 and will no longer allow new uploads to their site as of April 30, 2021. We have connected with the Google team to find a seamless solution to transfer models from Poly to Sketchfab and today we’re pleased to announce the launch of our Poly to Sketchfab app: polytosketchfab.com.

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

    • For Google, it's probably not a big investment :) They have a reputation of launching services and cancelling them a few years later and I think it's starting to hurt them now - people are becoming weary of putting any work into platforms that are likely to disappear quickly again..

      • That's exactly as you describe it, Bart. On the other side, I've never seen any of their ads on websites I visit. Only remember the release announcement a few years ago.
The move from SketchFab is definitely a smart one and nice to the ppl who are on poly platform.

  1. I had *never* heard of Google Poly before this announcement.

With that lack of messaging, no wonder it died.

Bart's got it right too. Having the rug pulled out from under me over and over is what led me to open source. OSS doesn't goes extinct until the last user quits.

I mean, really, google only keeps alive services that can be used to sell ads. If they launch a new service and you don't see any way they could put ads, or gather ad data from that service, you'd be wise to not put your eggs in it. Not even paying subscriptions or buying content count, as we saw with google music...
