Rigging Vehicles in Blender

I have wanted to create rigs for vehicles and machinery for several years but I've had to learn the hard way how the rigging mechanics in Blender works. Utilising support from the community, reverse engineering pre-made models, and looking for tutorials that are very often cryptic and incomplete, learning how to rig cars using armatures can be an extremely difficult and troublesome journey. That's where I come in! I give you the basic ideas you need to form rigs, and then turn those thoughts into big, prideful and easily animatable machines!

I have spent the last few months building a rigging course that shows how to rig various different vehicles, including; a normal car, a bus, tank, plane and a goods vehicle.

I wanted the course to show how to alleviate some of the common problems found when rigging cars. One very big problem: the wheel stops spinning if a rig is turned 90°! I have setup a lecture which goes through how to minimize this problem and we explore the wheels further in the vehicle sections, including setting up ground detection systems, suspension (automatic, semi automatic, and completely manual,) plus how to set up curves and front axles.

There are five vehicles at the time of this post; the idea is we start off with the easiest rig (the car) so it's arguably the simplest to recreate. We then expand into other, bigger projects including the plane, tank, HGV and the bus.

I have built the models specifically for this course (with exception to the bus which spurred the urge to create this course in the first place.)

I am in the process of building a promotional video which will show the rigs at work, so I will add that to this post when it's ready, but if you would like to see some of the rigs in the meantime, you can find them on Blend Swap:

On top of the armatures themselves, I also cover how to set up drivers, expressions, custom shapes, custom properties, modifiers and constraints - all using inbuilt tools!

You can find the full course on Udemy - use coupon 3DFA7EFFC4EC79567CEA for a huge discount (valid until Feb 28).

I sincerely look forward to seeing you on the course and I can't wait to get started teaching you how to rig vehicles!
