The Responsible Hero - a twisted Superman short film

amheus writes:

THE RESPONSIBLE HERO - is a tragicomedic story about rescue attempt and its consequences based and inspired mostly by cheesy yet charming Superman movies from 70-80s. It is a simple straightforward story with a cheerful and a little bit nostalgic atmosphere contrasted by a grimm and sudden twist.

The whole project was in production for about a year from october 2019 till december 2020. My personal goal was to make a visually cinematic experience and I tried to put maximum effort into animation, camera work and editing. Being the only person responsible for visual part I always tried to find best solutions timewise, so it was crucial to plan ahead during the preproduction stage and smartly cut corners where possible. During the process of trials and errors I managed to establish a workflow which helped me efficiently manage daily routine and make some progress every day even though it was pretty hard at times as it is a passion project done at free from work time.

In conclusion I should note that this is the first project where I started to use Blender as my main 3d package in production which was a blessing and a challenge in itself at the same time. All in all, now it became my main software which I am happy with. Everything was rendered in E-cycles with 7-9 minutes of average time per frame on RTX2060. Other softwares used on this project include Substance Painter, After Effects, Premiere Pro, Photoshop.

    • Nope, paper plane is not evil. It just caused this chaos in a "butterfly effect" style.
There is also a "mature" warning on vimeo, however you are right. I should have warned more obviously in description :)

Holy smokes! You weren't kidding about the "grim and sudden twist". Great work, though. Love the look of the clouds in the opening shot.

  3. That is really great! Always impressed by the time put in when a person does something like this...and when the result turns out great like this...it's just whoaa :D!

  4. is the cloth simulations also blender...?
if so...i wouldn't mind a tutorial on how you got it to not look so "floaty" if u know what i mean....also superb animation skills

    • Yes, all simulations are done in blender.
I don't remember doing anything too special with cloth but I remember playing around with air viscosity and speed multiplier in some shots. I think force fields like wind and turbulance also play a big role for convincing cloth.

  5. That is incredible! Genius!

You have achieved an unique mood over here! Congratulations Amheus!

And I think that you have a awesome story over here. I had a good laugh when the character used the shotgun against the television. Fortunately I was not part of that annoying audience (or am I? ;)

Also the corridor scene also gave me a lot of curiosity about how it would continue :)

Greetings from someone who was a teenager on the 90's watching a lot of sitcoms.
