Asset Browser Development in Full Swing

5

Blenderheads around the world, rejoice! The long-awaited asset browser's development is in full swing, and an experimental version of the browser is already in the latest Blender 2.92 alpha build. Julian Easel is leading the development charge, and he showcases its interface in the screenshot below.

In the following video, he demonstrates the Asset Browser in action (note that the UI here has changed a little bit since).

And finally, one more video showcasing threaded generation of object previews

In typical (and beautiful) Blender fashion, there are already multiple contributors shadowing the asset browser project and adding some flair to it, including this patch submitted by Harley Acheson, which changes the way the objects are displayed to a more aesthetically pleasing and informative disposition.

  1. The most natural and intuitive way to add stuff to the Asset Editor is by dragging and dropping. So I guess it's just redundant to do it via Outliner.
I also wish they'd implement user-defined subcategories. For instance, in the Shading section you'd be able to sort your material library into different material groups (concrete, metal etc).

    • Totally agree, drag and drop is a more human operation, we do need more subclassification, and even create folders. For me, it's more like another Outliner Editor currently, but switch display mode to the blender file, all can drag the data block into the 3D viewport. almost no difference but thumbnails, red heart...are you serious?

  2. I've got folders of obj, fbx, and blend file models and assets I hope can all be viewed in the same space and organized. Also materials and node groups too. That'd take blender to a new level.
