In this video, we will be creating a Digital Matte Painting called "The Forgotten Cottage".
Once we have arranged our workspace we can then load in our footage. If you want to follow along and download the same video I used (along with the other assets), you can find the links in our blog.
We can then render out a single frame that will be used as a reference. Using your Image Editor of choice, we can load the reference and begin arranging images, shadows, highlights and more.
After we have arranged our Matte Image we can then export it out as a PNG and using blender we can composite the Matte Painting and our Footage together.
We will look at two ways to do this, one is the normal way. The other is a quicker and easier way using the Free Blender Add-on, VFX Nodes (note, we will be using more nodes from the Add-on for composition).
Once we have added our Matte Image or Video to our footage we can move on to the compositing. This part is purely subjective and you can use this step to change your footage depending on your needs. In this example, I wanted a gloomy forgotten cottage in the middle of some dark forest.
When you are happy with how it looks, go ahead and render it out!. You can again use the old method of switching panels in the Properties tab (to set the resolution, output, file format and more) or you can use the VFX nodes Add-on there all those options are in one place.
I hope you find this video helpful and as always, thanks for reading!.
