The BlenderBIM Add-on extends Blender to provide features used by architects, engineers, and the construction industry. These features range from producing CAD drawings, to doing building physics simulations, to generating facility management registries from a building information database. Lendlease (a construction and property development firm) and Cox Architecture (an architecture firm) have recently collaborated to use Blender and this suite of add-ons to help design and construct a variety of buildings, from small construction prototypes to large infrastructure projects.
Our work was submitted to buildingSMART, the leading industry organisation behind international data standards for our built environment. Our entry has just been awarded the winner for the 2020 Awards Program under the Technology category. You can see our entry here: titled "Lendlease – “A modular toolkit for developing openBIM data pipelines” – AUSTRALIA."
This award marks a milestone for the use of Blender and free software in the current proprietary dominated building design and construction industry. It has also helped support a thriving community of architects and engineers who are helping develop and test free software in this industry. All the tools have been released open source. More information can be found on blenderbim.org and osarch.org
