Too bad the asset manager design has been put on the backburner.

According to this thread, they are working on it, but keep in mind that it's a big task that can't be tackled lightly and carelessly. Take a look into the Data & I/O section: https://devtalk.blender.org/t/2020-11-10-tuesday-talks-module-meetings/16086
I hope the Material Node will be added for 2.92. That plus the "Make custom object properties available in Attribute node" feature will be a game changer
