Jacques Lucke has just followed his powerful Mesh to Volume modifier with the perfect partner, promising powerful results when used in tandem. This partner in question is a new volume displace modifier, which extends the artist's ability to manipulate and render volumes in EEVEE and Blender in general.
This modifier is quite straightforward to describe but very powerful in action: It allows for the displacement of volume objects with 3D textures. This, however, when combined with the recently added Open VDB capabilities of Blender as well as the Mesh to Volume modifier, unlocks real-time workflows for volume detailing and procedural manipulation.
In practice, clouds for example would have their silhouettes easily modelled and then transformed into volumes using the Mesh to Volume modifier, and then have a Volume displace modifier applied with a noise texture to add turbulence and details, and still being able to render in EEVEE (and cycles of course), all without baking or simulating a single frame.
