Parametric Asset Libraries in Blender 2.90

Andrew Peel writes:

In this video I explain what parametric asset libraries are and how useful they can be.

I do this by demonstrating a library I am working on called Home Builder. The purpose of this library is to allow designers an intuitive way of creating interior spaces while also providing builders the engineering information they need to build the physical objects.

You can find out more about this project here.

  1. Wonderful idea.
I wish your assets also included inventory from Home Depot. Cabinets, plumbing, framing materials, maybe the whole store. Useful too if it could populate current pricing.
    Help with wireing, plumbing, hvac.
When I practice my home design (built own house, and others, but I work as engineer by trade) I populate furniture, people, design the house from the inside outward. The more parametric assets you can get the better.
I'm sure you know all of this but I hope this makes people see what a useful tool you have developed.
    Keep up the grand work

    • Yes including manufacturer specific assets is planned, but I need to get a bit further along with development before large companies would consider supporting an open source project. It will get there.

      • I could foresee opposition to putting out their dimensional information for their products in an open format for fear of folks replicating their designs.

But creating them a product and licensing it for them to use is something different altogether.

        • A lot of manufactures have dimensions and detailed specs provided on their websites. While the system allows you to create products with engineering data. It's also possible to create products that just provide the visual design. I assume most manufactures would be ok with this.

    • In the last year there has been a lot of functionality added to Blender that is similar to Sketchup and CAD applications. I assume over the next couple of years we will see a lot more.

  2. great work. i'm looking forward to seeing how this matures b/c i'd love to kick my current home design program to the curb
