Blender is one of the few software that rarely responsible for the past. File format incompatibilities, even between 0.1 releases, are common.
The other day I opened a 14 years old file in Blender without problems. The only thing I had to change was the materials.
Have to disagree on that. I've been using Blender for 7 years in my current job and assets I made 7 years ago still work reliably with even 2.90. I can confidently 'File -> Append' assets from them without even second guessing it.
