Blender Benchmark is the client of the Blender Open Data platform, which collects the results of software and hardware tests, and makes them available online for querying. These tests are based on up to 7 benchmarks (the quintessential Blender scenes such as Classroom and BMW27), which you chose to render either on CPU or GPU. Read more about it on this link.
Since its release in August 2018, more than 118000 benchmarks have been logged and are available for parsing on the online portal.
