Blender in Science: CASL’s Legacy

5

Michelle Lehman writes:

This is an animation I created for researchers at Oak Ridge National Laboratory that highlights a number of accomplishments that resulted from the Consortium for Advanced Simulation of Light Water Reactors, or CASL. This 10-year initiative allowed researchers to develop the VERA software suite, which can simulate the operation of an entire reactor down to the characteristics of a single fuel rod. The colorful data visualizations that VERA generates are stunning, therefore I made an effort to integrate real data into the animation. Take a look!

Software used: Blender (rendered in Cycles), After Effects, and Premiere.

  1. The timing and animation really dance, that would have taken me forever to plan out.

Did you get official 3D models from CASL, or did you have to build them from scratch, maybe blueprints?

Keep animating! We all get a little smarter every time you do these.

    • Hi John, thanks for the kind words! There were some 3D assets I was able to use; however, there was also good chunk of modeling involved for this particular animation. Ton a fun and learned a lot about nuclear energy :)
