Are you a Linux Blender user who likes using appimages? Have you been disappointed by the lack of an appimage for Blender, our favorite 3D software? Then worry no more!

I've compiled and packaged a Blender appimage, from the latest build of Blender 2.83.4 and 2.90 beta. You can find these at my github repo here: https://github.com/Songtech-0912/Prometheus-Project.

Or you can download directly from either here for 2.83 or here for 2.90.

Please leave feedback about the appimages, it will help me greatly in improving them. Thanks in advance!

  1. Im struggling to see any advantage of an appimage, given that we simply download and unpack the archive to start using Blender. Maybe I'm missing something.

      • I am using Linux. appimages have their place.... sort of, but tend to be huge, as they pack all the needed libraries into the distribution. On a simplistic level, this removes the dependency problem. I have never had a problem with just downloading the Linux Blender archive and unpacking it. This seems like a solution in search of a problem.

    • I can understand your point, but I just wanted to give the community another option for using Blender. In addition, I would say that appimages can be more easily integrated into a desktop (via appimage launcher) than an archive, and also support updating easier than an archive (but that's just my point of view)

      • Fair enough, but I just usually delete the old version and download the new one. Anyway, it's always good to have choices.

  2. Yes, "apt install blender" is simpler, but if it doesn't work and/or your system is old and broken, an appimage can save your day/week/month, while you study the best scenario to fix your computer. Thanks a lot Songtech_3D!!!!

  3. Thankyou ! This works great for me. I have several Linux installations on the same hard drive and I don't have to keep installing Blender in each one, I just use the appimage.

  4. .appimages are wonderful ultra portable good for flash drives , external hdd's ect.
My favorite use is for machines without networking. I use for applications I know ill probably use right away on new installs too.
Also helpful running on live usb's.
I haven't got icons to show up on them, but hadn't tried anything to fix it really, just got used to them having the generic icons :D i think its a linux mint thing

  5. Appimages > Flatpaks & Snaps! AppImage apps are super portable, self-contained packages including everything needed to run the app. A great lifesaver that can be run portable or integrated into your system. A shame, most applications don't use them for packaging their apps to make them portable.

  6. Awesome Dude ! I work with many distros and versions of distros, and have a lot of my apps as appimages.
This means, I don't have to install into each system and in some cases deal with dependency hell.
AND I don't have to remember which system has which software installed.
