Behind the Scenes: Red Car

About

Hi, I’m Manu Järvinen from Finland. I’m an animator, illustrator and 3D modeler who has worked in the industry for more than 10 years, mostly for Rovio Entertainment Corporation, but also for 9 months at the Blender Institute in the Netherlands. I was part of the Gooseberry team that made Cosmos Laundromat - First Cycle.

For this image, I just started to sketch a car in Krita with no specific goal in mind. Just a normal project for my free time. I have made a lot of cartoony cars and enjoy it so I was straight in my comfort zone for this. This is what came out in Krita:

Modeling

Then I just modeled it, it was quite a simple shape.

Texturing

For texturing I just joined all the materials of the same type to be one object and then I used ‘UV’ > ‘Smart UV Project’ with default settings to have some kind of base to work on very easily. I used a map size of 8K.

In Blender, I texture painted only black and white images that worked as masks for the rust. It helped a lot that you can make Blender view the final result in the viewport and not that black and white mask.

My lighting setup was only a large area light and a little bit of blue world lighting:
