Video: WW2 Dogfight

Julien writes:

A new short 3d Blender 2.83 animation of Second World War soviet fighter aircraft. This short introduced the story of the «Normandy Niemen» regiment, an air squadron of the French Air Force that fought nazi Germany during the Second World War on the Eastern front, from 1942 to 1945.
I was learning and getting myself up to date for the new 2.83 version of blender and decide to create a CGI animation with aircraft and war environment.

The workflow:

  • Assets modeled and animated on Blender 2.83 (Some assets are from Blendswap, CgTrader, Turbosquid…)
  • Assets textured on Subtance Painter
  • Assets rigged in Blender 2.8
  • Full PBR Textures, on all assets.
  • Characters: the base mesh comes from Adobe Fuse. Animation are from Mixamo, skining done in blender.
  • FX Simulation on Blender 2.83 Mantaflow
  • Render with Blender 2.8 Cycles with 400 samples for the interior shots, and 200 samples for the outdoor.
  • Render times: ≈ 119h
  • Post-production and compositing on After Effects 2020

  1. Ah the time when fighting the Nazis was a good thing, before it was a bad thing...

The French Communist party was forbidden in 1939 for collaboration with enemy.

Animation is good, but i have in some shots sensation that the aircraft is still and the world moves around it. This is specially egregious in air combat games, but here is just a smaller sensation.

    • Thanks for watching!

Even in 39, not all the French were communists! After the defeat, De Gaulle’s Free France had the particularity of bringing together all the political groups to get back France. It was the incompetent and cowardly officers who led to the defeat of 40.

I understand your sensation. However, the aircrafts animations are "real size" (About 300 km/h). Maybe it’s the animation of the camera, that follows the planes too easily?

      • I didn't say they were. My point is that Communists were allied with Nazis from 1939 to 1941 and sabotaged factories in France and England. For them France and England fighting against the Nazis was an Imperialist war. Until things changed in 22 June 1941...

Yeah that would my first guess that the camera is maybe going at too similar speed.
I really liked the ground parts of the video. Specially the shot when the engine lets smoke out. The top shot to the hangars seem more miniature instead,

What is your hardware if i can ask?

PS: i admire your capacity to go to a project to the end.

        • yep, it was a complicated time for Europe... In addition, some officers refused to fight the nazis at all costs. They preferred submission and defeat, especially in France. Fortunately, not all of them.

For the aerial shot, I had to reduce particles counts and increase the size of the grass, otherwise the scene would have been too heavy for the rendering.. This gives a miniature sensation to the shot...

          PC Spec:
          i7 6700
          48GB DDR4
          RTX 2080 Ti

          Thanks for the comment.

          • Yes you can. It’s the rendering that is complicated. If your graphics card doesn’t have enough video memory, Cycles won’t start the rendering, and it will take forever with the cpu. However the latest RTX graphics cards are powerful, some can load heavy scenes. But very expensive too.
