Would it be possible to have a toggle option that merged automatically ( and temporarily ) on hover ( so the user can quickly see the final result by just moving the mouse around ), with committed on click? For lower detail models, the undo would hopefully be pretty quick.
Would be great if you can open a issue here: https://github.com/Stromberg90/Scripts/issues that way we can track it, and if others have the same issue they can find the solution there.

You're genius!
To use: Install add-on as usual.
Select an object and go into the mesh editor.
Use F3 to search for operation: "Merge Tool Operator"
Using mouse, left-click on a mesh vertex
While holding down left mouse button, drag to another vertex.
A red line will be drawn to indicate the operation in process.
Release the mouse button and the first vertex will be merged to the position of the second vertex.
This merging operation may be repeated continuously until some other operation is selected.
Thanks for putting together a step by step :)
So this looks like Alt+M without a couple of steps? That's kind of nice!
Very cool!

Just activate snap to vertex with automerge on?
those are two steps, and two more steps to set it back to normal, this is only one!
Hi , There are some problems with this tool. Once the tool is activated we cant undo!
Right Click after you've merged
I installed the addon correctly but when I am in edit mode and search for the tool in "Menu search" doesn't appear.
I am using Blender 2.91
