Utilizing DisplayLand App to 3D photogrammetry capture into Blender

In recent months, I have been doing some 3D photogrammetry scanning using my iPhone and an app called Display Land. This app process the photos captured using your smartphone on their cloud and in just a few minutes, you are getting back a 3D mesh of the environment that you scan. Even handier, in the last update, the app allows you to export 3D format mesh OBJ, GLTF, or PLY that you can edit in Blender. 3D scanning for large environment has never been easier!

  1. I'm finding the results in display land to be not very good. I've done photogrammetry for a long time using traditional techniques and never have issues. But this app needs more development. Protip, you need to move very slowly using this app to get decent results.

    • The result varies, can be okey at time. Probably best for interior, with proper light, but mostly rough. Occassionally I get a really good result.

I wish that it can give extra details on some areas, say for sculpture, I want just that sculpture to have more details. Then crop using Blender.

  2. I tried to use this app quite a few times, some didn't ´process, some scanned everything BUT the object I wanted, then I got one that I thought I could try to get into Blender, used the share link from the app and... the link didnt' work.

    Can't say I am enthusiastic

  3. Hi to all! I'm one of the designers of display.land, and I personally really appreciate the interest and feedback. I'd just add that:

    a) the models definitely still have some room for improvement, although we've come a long way in the last 6-8 months (we were still rendering point clouds as the final result in June of last year).

    b) as Andrew mentions, it's pretty different from traditional photogrammetry. You're capturing a video as opposed to static frames, so there's not as much wiggle room for failure. It's still a bit of a steep learning curve, but we're trying to produce helpful content/tutorials, and we're getting a lot of help from the community. So thanks Jimmy!

Also happy to answer any questions if people have them :)

      Hey!

I've been using the app a lot for the past few weeks and love it! I'd like to be able to download and view my meshes on desktop. Are there any plans for a share to Sketchfab option?

      Thank you!

      • Awesome! Glad to hear it :) You can currently download your meshes in two ways - you can either send yourself a link to your capture and open it on a desktop browser, or you can tap the share icon, and then select the download mesh button. That link you can send yourself and then open it wherever.

No immediate plans for a Sketchfab integration, but you can share your scans quite easily and they should be viewable on anybody's phone/computer/browser.

  4. I FOUND IT VERY USEFUL, CAUSE I HAD MODELLED A SCULPTURE IN THE CITY CENTRAL, DURBAN. IT SHOWS AN ANGEL OVER TWO ANGELS LOOKING THE CITY HALL. NEXT TIME I WON'T HAVE TO GO THROUGH THE AUDIOUS TASK OF MODELLING SOMETHING FOUND IN THE ENVIRONMENT

  5. I tried using display land for months. About 85% of attempts are unsuccessful (mostly due to naive upload implementation), and the ones that succeeded, are not very high quality. Works great with street art in mission district, but anything more complex breaks it quickly. If you have a flaky internet connection it is downright impossible to upload your capture due to lack of ability to resume upload.
