Video: How does an Oscillating Fan work?

1

Jared Owen writes:

This common table fan is more interesting than you think! I took mine apart and animated how it works - most of the video focuses on the "Four Bar Mechanism" and the gears that allow it to oscillate back and forth.

The Four Bar Mechanism was a little hard to animate. I used an armature with inverse kinematics to get the 2 bars for follow the "crank." Then I created one property called "OscillateFan" and several drivers listening to it. That way I only need to animate 1 property for the fan to work!

I love making these kinds of animations. What other household objects would make a good animation? Suggestions are always welcome😎

  1. I love the style at which you explain things. This is very informative. I actually always wondered how the oscillation in a fan worked. I noticed that no matter what speed it was set to, the oscillation barely changed in speed. Now I know. Thank you!
