Blender Add-on Review: PolyQuilt (Free) - A must for modelers

I great tool for modelers and artists, this makes lowpoly modelling a breeze.

PolyQuilt is an add-on for Blender2.8 that supports low poly modeling. In addition to simple, orthodox and old-school surface functions, various functions are assigned to mouse operations such as dragging and long pressing to minimize polygon switching and support polygon modeling. It also works well with tablets and tablet PCs with digitizers, enabling intuitive modeling while reducing the amount of operation.

  1. Is there a 2.7x version? Modeling like that, with a mouse only, is way faster than time consuming hotkeys+clicking menu options. Oh, and should be made default to attract yet more users. Mouse everything.

    • On Github: Click "Clone or Download" (green button) -> Download ZIP. Save wherever you prefer, I recommend you pick some place consistent for all downloaded add-ons.

      Do not unzip.

In Blender: Edit -> Preferences -> Add-ons -> Install... -> [navigate to directory where you saved the add-on.] -> Install Add-on. Add-on should now be searchable in the Add-ons section of preferences. Check the box next to the name to enable it if needed.

Even better approach, if you want to quickly check for and download updates: Download GitHub Desktop: https://desktop.github.com. Then on the add-on page over at GitHub, click on Code and "Open with GitHub Desktop"! In GitHub Desktop, you specify where you want to download the (version controlled) add-on on your local computer. Once you've done that, you may close GitHub Desktop and then (!), this step is important, you should zip down the downloaded folder. After that, you simply installed the zipped add-on like you do with any add-on in Blender! Voila. Oh, and at chosen intervals, you can pop open GitHub Desktop and see if the add-on has some new changes in the upstream repository and then pull those down. Rinse and repeat.

I should add, that sometimes it won't work by simply zipping the main repository folder. Some repositories places the actual add-on in sub folders, in which case you'll have to dig around and locate the specific folder and then zip that one instead. (They usually contain a Python file called __init__.py)

  2. Thank you nanoglyph. I thought that would work but in this case it didn't. The zip you need to install the addond is inside the bigger zip file. I luckily figured that out so i could test this awesome modeling plugin . Thx again.

    • My mistake. Most add-ons are packaged such that unzipping messes up the install. Haven't ran into one packaged like that, yet. Glad you figured it out.
