Art Spotlight: Steampunk Pirates – The Stormriders

0

3D Artist Guillaume Bolis shares how he used Blender to make Steampunk Pirates: The Stormriders as part of a month-long personal challenge.

Hi, my name is Guillaume Bolis. I’m a 19-year-old French student from “Objectif 3D,” a 3D-oriented school in Montpellier (France).

I spent most of my life abroad and recently started studying at this school, but I’ve been doing 3D art for around three years now. I’ve learned everything from YouTube tutorials and figuring out stuff by myself. I studied engineering for two years before leaving for Objectif 3D, but now I can finally work full-time on what I love!

I like working on a lot of different projects at the same time. I try doing commission work, but I spend most of my time helping small game developers making their projects’ 3D work. More often than not, what I do for those devs end up available for free on my itch.io account.

Once a project is finished, I like giving those assets away instead of deleting them, to let everyone use them!

I mainly use Blender for modeling and rendering, but I also use Substance Painter for texturing and Photoshop for post-processing.

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.
