Good tutorial! I normally don't like video tutorials because the useful stuff is buried in too much small talk and fiddling around, but this was clear and fast and I liked the idea about the fog, since I have been trying to use the mist and/or depth passes but not very happy with the results.
One thing I didn't see. Did you put in children or drop the viewport display of the count shown? The render has way more trees than most of the 3d viewport scenes.
Another thought: I have also found that forest scenes need quite large transparency bounces or you get black spots in your vegetation, but it also really slows down the render. I boggled when you bumped it up to 128!
One comment about using a render service: compress the blend file when saving, it can save a lot of upload time for large files.
