NASA recently released some new texture maps and a reworked bump map set of the moon. This makes it much easier to render really good images of the moon without spending a lot of money or alternatively spending ages processing NASA data to make the texture maps yourself. I used a texture map and bump map both at 16384x8192 to render my test images and the results are significantly better than previous efforts with maps I created from the original data myself. The new texture and bump set nicely complements their Blue Marble Next Generation textures of the Earth. Grab the moon maps here. For the equivalent maps of the Earth look here.
