The facility to delete unused data should be built into Blender. In most of the 3D applications I use just saving a file saves it without any unused data, so a save, quit and reload sequence will leave me with a clean working file. Blender is the only 3D application I use that doesn’t have an easy way of doing this built in. When or if the developers address this you have shown them how to do it extremely well.
