My friend Cameron Casey and I have accepted a $10000 grant from Epic Games to work on a new project: 3D Model Haven!
Following in the footsteps of HDRI Haven and Texture Haven, 3D Model Haven will be a resource of high quality free (CC0) 3D assets for everyone.
Our goal is to create a constantly growing community-funded resource of open content, licensed as CC0 for complete freedom and usability by professionals and hobbyists alike.
The Epic grant will cover the work required to get the site up and running with some decent initial content, but after that we'll be relying on Patreon support just like HDRI and Texture Haven to keep it going.

This is fantastic news! Any thoughts how to avoid copyright infringing materials from ending up on the site?
Everything we publish will be completely our own original work, or acquired from artists who can prove the same. The site won't be open for public contribution, at least initially. If we do open it up, there will have to be strict processes to verify the origin of the content.
Amazing idea!
Are the models just flat lambert materials or are they going to be textured? also is it going to have rigged characters or character based modeled art. From What it sounds like it’s probably just going to be props and hard surface models?
They'll be fully textured and ready to be used.
We probably won't have full characters (at least initially) as they're significantly more work than the simple reusable props that everyone needs, and aren't as useful to as many people, but it's certainly something we'll look at down the road.
A handful of 3D scanned static models of 'average' people suitable for placing in scenes for architectural renders would be awesome. Say 'average guy jeans and tshirt', 'average woman jeans and tshirt', 'average guy in a suit', 'average woman in a suit'.
Why epic games. Their business practices are very sketchy
I always like to ask why someone thinks Epics practices are sketchy. I'm honestly curious. Why do you think this?
Probably the claims of Epic making fortnite too addictive, which I think are rather ridiculous. There is also Epic suing kids for copyright infringement when they used cheats for their games. While it is not really the way to treat your customers, I do think that was an isolated incident that was handled poorly and not really an indication of bad business practices.
Gulur troll, you can't accuse a company or a person without proof dude, but trolls will be trolls of course
Thanks Greg for the awesome websites and contributions <3
Already bookmarked the new site! :-)
I have a question, will there be an option to download the 3D model of blend file, other than fbx, obj, dae, etc. for blender users?
Yep, initially everything will be available as both .blend and .fbx - but down the road we plan to have native files for other 3d packages too.
I have one more question from your quote "Everything we publish will be completely our own original work, or acquired from artists who can prove the same". Will you buy the artist's 3D asset who is selling it for some rate and also permitting it to have CCO licence to his/her asset? Sorry if this question is naive. I am just curious to know the answer.
No its more along the lines of having inexcusably bad security that allows for brute force hackers to access accounts.
No shopping cart for their store, something companies could buy and slap in since the f-ing 90's. Their policy of unapologetically buying exclusivities for the intent of driving out other PC platforms. Which is all before you get into the possible Chinese gov connections via the majority holder Ten Cent.
Fortnite made them a juggernaut but their business practices are shoddy at best
Will artist get paid for his 3D model, if artist is selling it to you?
All 3 Haven websites are excellent. Thank you!
Hello,
This is really an amazing news, I have a query that will you buy or provide an opportunity to other artists for their work samples. I'm a modelling and texturing artist to.
Thank You
wow If I got 10k for 43 models I would be happy. I don't mean do critisize but guys, 43 models? you can do better than that
Indeed we can :) https://www.patreon.com/posts/fusing-of-havens-42250386
But 10k for 43 models is not a lot. Calculate about cost per asset, and time for each of them at your hourly rate. Anyway, it's clearly not a sustainable model to buy individual assets like we did, which is why we're now going the more traditional route of starting a studio.
