Pablo's Laptop got stolen at SIGGRAPH, here's what happened next

25

In a stroke of bad luck, Pablo's laptop got stolen yesterday:

So, my backpack got stolen with my laptop, camera, passport + a few other things :(

Been in Brazil, Venezuela, México, Argentina, all fine. Got stolen in the US, just bad luck. The most amazing thing was being inside of a real American police station in Skid Row, LA. Unreal.

Won't be making videos for the time being. Sorry.

But SIGGRAPH being SIGGRAPH, something wonderful happened next:

No words to describe this. Our friends at @intel heard about what happened and connected me with @boxxtech and they immediately helped out. An insane Intel i9, Quadro RTX, state of the art for computer graphics laptop 😱 #b3d #boxx #RTXON #isthisreallife

That's SOME SPECS there! Mind blown :)

Thanks to the massive support from the community ❤️ Overwhelming, really. You're awesome! :'D

My face when I saw the specs:

I think this was amazingly generous of the BOXX people, so I think they deserve a shout out. You're breathtaking! (Also, can I have one too? ;-) )

  1. Sorry Pablo!! It's SO INCREDIBLY INFURIATING when people take stuff that isn't theirs. UGH!!! Thieves are freakin' low-life people. Maybe not even people . . . :(

(Let's see now . . . where was that remote self-destruct for your old laptop?) ;)

Very cool that BOXX hooked you up!! Doubt you'll be down for long! Congrats!!

    • Hardware is replaceable? But what about the personal things? Such as family Fotos, important documents, videos of your loved ones, or most importantly all the .blend files?
have you stored it all in a cloud?

      • There is NO excuses for not having a backup setup.
Sounds harsh maybe, but digital files are quite vulnerable to loss.

Always be sure to have some form of backup running, or link to Onedrive, Google Drive, Dropbox or iCloud. Be sure, be safe wth your files.

But theft is always a pain. Hardware is replaceable, but it's more the feeling of being personally assaulted in a away.

Massive gesture of Boxx and all people involved, hope that will easy the pain a bit for Pablo.

Que cagada man, so dont worry. A veces las cosas suceden por algo. Ahora tienes una laptop nueva y actualizada con mejores prestaciones para seguir brindando más de Blender a la comunidad. Cheers por eso y viendo al futuro más nada.

Sorry to hear that, I hope the thieves have a change of heart and at least turn in you passport. Good On BOXX for donating the laptop! Blender Brings out the best in everybody. :)

  4. So you lost also your beloved mate-cup? Sorry man...
Hey wait... you lately drink only beer!

A-hem by the way... please tell that big nice guy from Boxx that I ehm... lost... hum.... my backpack too. Yeah. Me too. Tell him!

  5. I've had important things stolen from me as well so I know the feeling. That your friends and even strangers helped you out is so great! Thank you, Boxx! Good luck with the replacing the rest of the stuff, Pablo.

  6. So sorry to hear that you stuff was stolen, Happy to hear the kind individuals at BOXX hooked you up with a sweet machine. It was a pleasure meeting you at Siggraph.

  7. Hey, that spec sheet doesn't mention Blender! ;-)

Pablo, lo siento about the rest of your stuff, but so glad the world and Boxx gave something back.

  8. Sorry to hear that, the passport more than anything... it's like what Shakespeare said about a man's reputation: If you take it, you are not enriched, but he is left poor indeed. I hope they turn it in. Having met Pablo briefly at SIGGRAPH, he's about the nicest guy you'll ever find so I'm glad he got a new laptop.

  9. I really hope that the Blender dev team considers if they need to change repository keys and passwords now. If he had access to them from that laptop and the drive wasn't encrypted, they should change those immediately.
