Ubisoft joins Blender Development Fund

18

Today Ubisoft announced that they will join the Blender Foundation’s Development Fund as a corporate Gold memberNot only will Ubisoft help funding online support for Blender developers, Ubisoft Animation Studio – a department of Ubisoft Film and Television – will also use Blender for their productions and assign developers to contribute to Blender’s open source projects.

Some great quotes from the announcement:

Blender was, for us, an obvious choice considering our big move: it is supported by a strong and engaged community, and is paired up with the vision carried by the Blender Foundation, making it one of the most rapidly evolving DCCs on the market. [...] We believe that Blender 2.8, which will be released in the coming days, is a game-changer for the CGI industry.

Ton comments:

Good news keeps coming. It’s such a miracle to witness the industry jumping on board with us! I’ve always admired Ubisoft, as one of the leading games and media producers in the world. I look forward to work with them and help them finding their ways as a contributor to our open source projects on blender.org.

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. As long as those big companies like Epic or Ubisoft do not try to influence the overall future development, these are good news.

    • I can think of worse things than Epic and Ubisoft saying "Hey, our guys that literally spend 8-10 hours per day inside blender found some problems and room for improvement, and here's how we'd tackle it." I simply don't see it becoming "Hey, Ton. I need you to drop development on Eevee for a minute and create a lightning emulator tool. Or else."

  2. This is amazing, I'm so happy to hear that such great recognition is being given to the Blender foundation by an industry titan!

  3. Nowadays, when all the big companies are trying to buy our souls for the rest of our life with subscription payment methods, it's so amazing to read such good news. A free software becomes a legend! You guys behind Blender, you are our heroes! I'm so happy that big studios are starting to appreciate the power of the Blender community:)
