Blender 2.80 Release Candidate is online!

15

The Blender Foundation has just published the 'Release Candidate' of Blender 2.80. This is the version that, if no major issues are found, will be released as Blender 2.80 next week.

For now, please have a good read through the (impressive) release documentation, download Blender 2.80 RC and test it! Report any issues that you may find on the Blender bug tracker and help us get in shape for a full release.

One especially nice touch on the release notes is the collection of 2.80 demo files at the bottom, provided by some of the top artists from the Blender community! Be sure to try them out.

We'll have an in-depth look at Blender 2.80 at the releae here on BlenderNation next week. Stay tuned!

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.

  1. I tried to switch to the blender but I had to delete it every time but 2.8 with new ui looks great and easy, time to switch

  2. hmmm. even over a build from a couple of days ago... the Mac release candidate seems to have a number of new issues. first, drag and drop of blend files is broken. and when I went to the help menu to report the bug, the help menu is blank. kinda worrying that they broke the ability to report bugs in their release candidate... (unless I'm missing something?)

    • Not the NC, but I also found a bunch of bugs last night when I was working with the latest build that was available for download the day before. Hopefully we can help the devs polish this up.

    • oh yeah seeing how many things are missing and/or broken this might be more of a build issue, maybe someone forgot to check a flag or something. I'm sure it'll get fixed :)

      • I did find a report that there is a permissions issue with the installer. Cycles is missing, too. It’s marked high priority.

  3. I can confirm what Steve's reporting. Also, I've noticed the Add-ons area of the Preferences is broken. No add-ons show up and the buttons for installing and refreshing are gone.

  4. Congratulations..and thanks.. open source is like a flower blossom on the snowing field..it was awesome.continue the good work.

  5. Several keyboard short cuts seem to be non-functioning on MacOS, as well as the entire Keymap section of user preferences.

  6. Using a build from last week, setting the Subsurf modifier's Quality setting to 4 (whatever that means) caused Blender to crash and close without warning during rendering. I hope that terrible mimsy splash is replaced with something that might inspire a wider range of potential users, instead of only artistic character-animator types. Blender does so much more!

    • Well, Spring has prolly been the most challenging and successful project ever done with 2.8. So I gather one should have expected it would make it into B3D, I mean the splash.

  7. Great news, but lots of issues, specially at selectings items (objects, vertices, faces, etc...) and the addons I use (decalmachine, hardops) don't work well with this release so I guess I have to be patient.
