How to post 3D models directly to your facebook timeline

I would say whether or not it’s a gimmick is dependent on the user, viewer, and content. Due to the current limitations and problems, there seem to be better 3d model visualization options available for the web, but they require more effort, expertise, and possibly money, to enact.
“This is the new design of the U.S. penny. Review and discuss!” seems like a perfectly non-gimmicky use of the technology.
