Batavia 1627

It is quite a while back that I have posted new work, this is because I spend all my time ( 1.5 year) on my new project: Batavia 1627.

I tried to merge my CG worlds into a realtime large VR environment. For this I cooperated with a Dutch museum to display all of this in a VR setup on location. We picked the HP Reverb to display the content.

The project was intense, I had lots of challenges to make it work, but happy to see it all working now. All assets where made with Blender. I used the Unreal engine 4 to make it work in VR. Users can fly around and discover some nice hotspots in the city. If we get through the test period we might launch it on steam.

In short, Batavia is nowadays called Jakarta. My reference was an old map from 1627. I worked with a researcher to help me with all architecture details. Characters and boats where created by team members.

Texture Haven was used for most texture work. If you like to see the full work in progress, take a look on my ArtStation page to see more info and WIP development.

Try to avoid dummy affect ( bird tail + legs), or move the camera to be above the bird. Other than that, you did a great job.

  2. Really cool! Like the whole historic recreation concept of the project. I do have to agree with others about the bird. It is an fun idea but besides needing to glide a lot more, it is just way to much of the video and is often distracting. Perhaps if it was the focus at just the beginning and end and maybe briefly, just often enough during, to remind of us of the "bird's eye" view.

  3. A great job. But the bird takes away quality. The idea is good, but the bird is not worked enough to be so important. Be careful with the animation breaks of the wings.

However, the start of the shot after "Made with Blender" is great.

I comment this only because the work that is beyond the bird is ... awesome!

  4. Beautiful work, So other viewers have commented already and point out some mistakes...
    I would say..
    Animation - needs improvement.
    Rendering - 10/10
    Environment - 9/10
    Cinematography - needs Improvement

I would suggest... you should render in low scale with 5fps, and watch frame by frame for hours... and see what is glitching. Then render high res random images... to see in details..

Specially at 0:31 and 0:32.. see something (shouldn't be there) find it yourself. :)

I would again say... critique takes seconds and rendering only one image takes days!. yOu've done an excellent JOB.

  5. Very nice :). However, for a brief moment (at about 0:11 - 0:12) the there is a huge reflection of the bird's wings on the surface of the water... ;)

  6. cant wait to see it on steam
lose the bird or have it less contrast ratio than any main focal point , otherwise will be the focal point and become a distraction
