Drawing from Reference using Grease Pencil

Hi Blendernation! In this tutorial, I outline a couple of methods for drawing from reference using the Grease Pencil. You can create a 2D sketch based on either a background image, or an in-scene model, and then have a crisp, easy-to-edit 2D asset inside of 3D space.

NB: While a demo file is supplied, the model seen in the picture is not included due to copyright restrictions, however links have been provided to reputable model repositories.

Paul Caggegi

I’ve been a motion-graphics artist, video editor & 3D effects creator for over fifteen years, working full time since 2001, and freelance since 2008. Over the years, I’ve worked on several corporate campaigns, TV commercials, web-videos, showreels and media branding packages for clients such as Nickelodeon, Saachi & Saachi, and Leo Burnett. More recently, I’ve lectured at JMC Academy teaching classes in concept design, story, and 3D modelling. Besides the professional stuff, I also produce "Homebased" – a webcomic all about the life of a stay-at-home dad. I recently started a Patreon page to teach illustrators how to use Blender so they can create assets for their own projects.
