I have created a Group Node which allows creating Butterfly Effect graphics with animation nodes for blender 2.79 and blender 2.80. It is very simple and has few parameters which you adjust to create a different look of the effect. You can download the Group-Node blend files here.
Happy Noding :)

I have struggled with understanding the (im?)practical use of Lorenz Attractors for the listed purpose of study in convection of fluid. Perhaps you could explain this? Does it attempt to explain the pathway of a given floating particle at a given initial location in space (in a convecting fluid?) Every other time-dependent simulation I've seen doesn't really resemble a Lorenz Attractor. Otherwise, it's very interesting that you've cobbled this together in Blender for us... Thanks!
The fluid is a notorious thing which is difficult to understand that is a reason even today we do not have a proper theory of turbulence. However, in certain conditions, we can describe and understand the fluid with Hydrodynamics Equations (see the book "The physics of fluids and plasmas" by Arnab Raichoudhuri, to solve fluid equations https://nbviewer.jupyter.org/github/barbagroup/CFDPython/blob/master/lessons/00_Quick_Python_Intro.ipynb). The Lorenz Attractor is a kind of toy model for the atmospheric to understand the dynamics because Fluid Equations are highly non-linear and difficult to solve.
